How to Brew Pour Over Coffee: A Step-by-Step Guide

Pour over coffee is one of the most rewarding brewing methods you can master at home. It's hands-on, meditative, and when done right, produces a cup that's clean, bright, and full of nuance — exactly the kind of experience we're passionate about at Vacation Coffee.

What You'll Need

The Recipe

Ratio: 1:15 to 1:17 (coffee to water)
Dose: 15g coffee / 250ml water
Grind: Medium-fine (similar to table salt)
Total brew time: 2:30–3:30 minutes

Step-by-Step Method

1. Rinse Your Filter

Place the paper filter in your V60 and rinse it thoroughly with hot water. This removes any papery taste and pre-heats your dripper and vessel. Discard the rinse water.

2. Add Your Coffee

Grind 15g of coffee to a medium-fine consistency. Add it to the rinsed filter and give the dripper a gentle shake to level the bed.

3. The Bloom (0:00–0:45)

Start your timer and pour 30–40ml of water (about twice the weight of your coffee) in a slow, circular motion, making sure all the grounds are saturated. This is the bloom — CO₂ escapes from fresh coffee, and allowing it to degas ensures even extraction. Wait 30–45 seconds.

4. Main Pours (0:45–2:30)

Pour the remaining water in slow, steady spirals from the centre outward, keeping the water level consistent. Aim to finish pouring by around 2:00–2:15 minutes.

5. Drawdown

Allow the coffee to drain completely. The bed should be flat and even when done. Total brew time should land between 2:30 and 3:30 minutes.

Dialling It In

Pour over rewards small adjustments. If your cup tastes sour or weak, try a finer grind or slower pour. If it tastes bitter or harsh, coarsen your grind or lower your water temperature slightly. Keep notes — even small changes make a big difference.

Choosing Your Coffee

Pour over shines with lighter roasts that have floral, fruity, or tea-like characteristics. Browse our Brewing Tools collection and pair your dripper with a single origin that excites you.
